They may tell you go to see a therapist and then give you anti-depressants and send you out the door...

It depends on why you're depressed. In general they have to take you seriously...and pills are only involved if it has something to do with your bodily functions.

Firstly, let me tell you how very brave I think you are getting the courage to go and see a doctor about something like depression. I understand how hard it can be to realise that you can't quite cope on your own and you have to make it official. I don't doubt that you're doing the right thing. No good doctor will ever fob you off with medication. Chances are, it'll start off with a little chat about just how you've been feeling, what kind of emotions you have, when you have them, and how they make your react. Secondly, they'll ask you a few questions to gage your response, and they'll write these down. I'm not going to give you an example, or tell you what this test is called because if you look up information on it, it could cause the results to be bias. You should answer these questions as honestly as you can, regardless of how uncomfortable the answers may make you feel, because they are useful. Then, if you are having problems with depression the doctor may choose to refer you to the mental health team, which again isn't something to worry about. They may also decide to prescribe you some medication, but that really depends on how you're feeling, and what kind of response the test has given. Honesty is the most important thing through all of this, really it is. I know it's scary, but you can't lie to yourself, or to the doctor. I hope it has some good outcome, and if you need to chat message me.

although not a process i have been through, it is a process my boyfriend is currently going through. by the time he gets a prescription, it will have been 1.5 months since his first appointment. the first appointment, the doctor spoke to him, found out the general background, and did a blood test (for vitamin deficiencies etc...which he was found to have a pretty major one). the second appointment, she put him on the vitamin (which has helped a lot), and also did a full evaluation. it was a test, where he answered questions related to the disease. depending on where you score is how bad you are. lets just say, he came out pretty bad. the third, and hopefully second last, appointment is next week. this time, i have to go with him at the doctor's request. i'm the one who told him he needed to see a doctor in the first place (which, in itself is another story...and not a fun one either), so she wants me there to tell her some things he can't necessarily. on that day, he'll be prescribed an anti-depressant. there will then be a follow-up appointment a bit later on to see if it's working. hopefully it is, and everything will be fine. if it's not, she'll try a different one. so that's basically the process. of course it's different for everyone, and varies between doctors, but this seems to be protocol around here. he's not getting any counselling yet because he doesn't feel like he can talk to anyone. that might change once the meds kick in. my father has been through this process more times than i can count over 10 years. the difference is that in teens, often after ~1.5 years of meds, the depression more or less rights itself.
